Occasional Teachers + Inclement Weather

DAILY/DOTs

  • Please note assignments are not cancelled if the teacher is still away, you are to show up at work even if the buses are cancelled.
  • Teachers should not be cancelling OTs. That is a principal’s responsibility. If you get a cancellation call from anyone other than the Principal or VP ask if they were instructed by the Principal or VP to call. No one else can make that decision.
  • No OT should be cancelled because buses are not running.
  • No OT should be told today that if the buses are not running, consider the assignment cancelled.
  • The Principal does not know until school starts how many teachers are present or how many children are present. That is when decisions should be made.
  • Please email, pres@oceota.com, or call the office 613-221-9135 if you were cancelled for any reason. (I will need your EIN, the confirmation number and the email you received telling you of the cancellation and I will need to know if you received a phone call, the time of the call, who called and what was said) Please do not leave any information out. If I have all the info, a decision can be made quickly as to whether you were treated properly or not.

LATE ARRIVAL:

If you are going to be late or if you are unable to get out of your street, email the school to say that you will be arriving but traffic is slow and you will be late or that you are stuck and waiting for a plough or a tow truck and will update them about your arrival, a little later. Do update them periodically.

If you can not get to school or are late, there will be no reduction in pay…. Confirm that by email with the Principal.

ASSIGNMENT CHANGES:

If there is a reduced enrolment or if teachers are unable to get to school, your assignment might be changed. You might be asked to cover a mix of 2 or 3 grades but never more than a reasonable class size, never more than 2 or 3 grade levels and never more than a reasonable number of students unless there is another teacher also supervising and never all day without a break. If asked to do something unreasonable or asked to be in an unsafe situation, please make your feelings known to the Principal in a respectful way. If the Principal insists, please comply. In either case, report the issue to OCEOTA.

REDUCTION IN PERCENTAGE:

If there are few students and most staff is present, you may be cut to a half day assignment. Sometimes, if staff is unable to get to school, you may be offered an extension on a partial day assignment.

LONG TERM OCCASIONAL ASSIGNMENTS

From PR 563 HR:

3.3 When snow, sleet, ice storms, extreme temperatures or other inclement weather prevail but schools remain open, staff is expected to make every reasonable effort to report for duty. The responsibility for determining reasonable effort rests with the principal, manager or supervisor, and will take into consideration conditions at the staff member’s place of residence, as well as prevailing overall weather conditions. No deduction of pay will be made where a staff member has made every reasonable effort to report for duty but has been unable to do so.

3.4 Possible lateness in reporting or inability to report at all because of inclement weather will be reported to the principal, manager or supervisor by the staff member concerned as soon as possible. When a staff member reports late due to inclement weather, there will be no deduction in pay.

LATE ARRIVAL:

If you are going to be late or if you are unable to get out of your street, call/email the school to say that you will be arriving but traffic is slow and you will be late or that you are stuck and waiting for a plough or a tow truck and will update them about your arrival, a little later. Do update them periodically.

If you can not get to school or are late, there will be no reduction in pay…. Confirm that by email with the Principal.

DEFENDING OUR WORKING CONDITIONS AND OUR RIGHTS:

We need to all work together, to defend these hard fought gains. If we drop these matters, when not handled properly, we put the rights of all OTs at risk of being lost. These rights are from previous rounds of bargaining and cannot be adjusted or denied by a Principal any more than a Principal can decide to pay you less than what is written in the Collective Agreement.
